This article is a review of the experiences with 162 central venous catheterization at surgical department, Gyeong Sang National University Hospital, Chin Ju, Korea from January, 1990 to December, 1990.
@ES The result were as follow;
@EN 1) Of 162 total patients, the patients of general surgery was 61(37.65%), the patients of neurosurgery was 45(27.78%), the patients of thoracic surgery was 40(24.69%), and the patient of orthopedic surgery was 16(9.88%).
2) On age distribution, the patients between 50 to 59 was 68(41.98%), the patients between 40 to 49 was 40(24.69%), the patients above 61 was 22(13.58%), the patients below 10 was 14(8.64%), the patients between 30 to 39 was 10(6.17%), and the
patients
between 10 to 30 was 8(4.94%).
3) The indications of central venous catheterization were major operation(102 cases), sepsis(27 cases), hyperalimentation(16 cases), hypovolemic shock(14 cases), and major burn(3 cases).
4) The sites of catheterization were right subclavian vein(94 cases), left subclavian vein(38 cases), right and left subclavian vein(19 cases), and internal jugular vein (11 cases).
5) Duration of catherization was most frequently for 7~10 days(109 cases), followed by 11~15 (50 cases). The longest duration was for 28 days(3 cases).
6) The overall complication rate was 6.79%(11 cases). The complication were catheter septicemia(5 cases), pneumothorax(3 cases), arterial puncture(1 cases), hydrothorax(1 cases), and catheter thrombus(1 case).
7) The cultures of catheter tips of patients with unknown origin fever(13 cases) was done, and positive cultures were 5 cases(45.45%).
8) The cultured organisms were Hansenula anomala(2 cases), staphylococcus(1 case). Pseudomonas aeruginosa(1 cases), and yeast(1 case).
9) The technical success rate was 96.91%.
